Valentine’s Day
The History of Valentine
Valentine’s day is celebrated every year on 14th February. It is a day to show your loved ones how much you care about them. The day has its roots to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was held every year on 15th February. The festival honoured the God Lupercus and celebrated at the beginning of spring.
The festival eventually died out, but was revived by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD. He declared 14th February to be St. Valentine’s Day, names after a Christian matyr who was executed on that day. The holiday remained relatively obscure until the Middle Ages, when it became associated with courtly love. This was a time when knights would serve ladies they admired from afar and express their love for them through grand gestures like giving them flowers or writing poems in their honor.
By the 18th century, Valentine’s day had become commercialized in England, with paper Valentines being mass-produced and sold in stores. These Valentines were often crudely made and featured offensive images and verses.
